Congratulations Mini Marathoners!

flora-mini-marathon

To all the fabulous women that completed the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon yesterday we offer a huge congratulations! Hold your medal up high and say “Well Done to Me”!!

Well done to you all, it was a fantastic achievement!

As a participant myself, stiff legs and aching limbs make for a very tired lady this morning but nevertheless we should be so proud of ourselves and all the fundraising that has gone alongside the day itself.

Monday 6th June 2011 is a day to be remembered with just over 40,000 joggers and walkers…. with a good few “men in tights” joining us all and putting a little smile on our faces!

Charities of all shapes and sizes were represented with a vast array of coloured shirts, which in itself was mesmerising – particularly at the 6km marker and coming down the fly-over at UCD. It was right at that point that was so breath-taking and seeing exactly how many people care that much to participate in such an event!

So many worthwhile causes had a representative yesterday, everyone from regional Cancer Support Groups and respite centres, to Temple Street Hospital, to Crumlin, to Motor-Neurons to name a few!

After yesterdays efforts, I think the one thing we can say about the people of our country is that although there are people in need of medical treatmentwithin the walls of our hospitals, we are a nation that deeply cares about both the welfare of our people and the organisations who are trying to help them with their struggles in life. And Monday 6th June 2011 is testament to that.

Whether you walked, jogged or skipped, whether you fundraised for a respite centre, a childrens hospital, a cancer support group, or something more specific like Motor Neurons Disease, yesterday has proved that we are a nation that cares intensely and has now shown this nationally that we are more than willing to do our fair share to contribute to such fantastic causes.

To the Women of the Flora Mini Marathon of 2011 – Congratulations! You have done everyone of this country proud!

Bah Humbug!

Dont let Ebenezer Lenihan Ruin your Christmas

Dont let Ebenezer Lenihan Ruin your Christmas

Twas a few days before the budget, and all around the house, Nothing stirred, not even a mouse….

What festive cuts can we expect this year and what will it all mean for you and I?  Christmas… Bah Humbug!

Assuming that we don’t all get looted while the law is on strike, we can assume that we will all be a bit worse off, but we were expecting that.  Life will be a bit more of a struggle and, if we were to believe the general theme of the press, one could be forgiven for thinking that this may well be the last Christmas ever – such are the prevailing prophecies of doom for our little isle.

I for one do not think that that the level of doom and gloom is warranted.  I’m fed up of people saying that it’s going to be an awful Christmas.  Have people forgotten what it’s all about?  Did the Celtic Tiger take away our sense of magic?  Santa may well be affected by the budget too and his gifts may be more frugal.  Does that make him any less wonderful than I remember him from my own childhood?

In recruitment we have seen an upturn.  It is not a huge one, but it is an upturn never the less.  Businesses know that if they are not growing and finding new ways to do business better than their competitors, then they are not going to pull through.  The point some people seem to be missing is that a large percentage of our businesses have been through recessions before.  They have the experience to know what is required to pull through it.

All you nurses, doctors and other medical staff know that you are going to be in demand.  Nursing was a popular career choice during the 80′s when nursing offered security above and beyond that of other careers.  With the Celtic Tiger came a feeling of entitlement.  If the country is so rich, where is the share for the front line workers?  But that has changed again.  Now there is nothing.  Nothing?  There is security in a career that will always be in existence, you will always be needed.

It holds true for all medical staff.  Science careers are also more assured than most.  Ireland is putting considerable resources into maintaining and indeed accelerating R+D investment.  Simple economics are at play here (the type that even I have no problem understanding).  More exports = More money coming into the country.  This is the best way of increasing a countries wealth.  So to get more revenue in we need to export. Develop and sell.  The multi-nationals have a huge part to play here too.  They create jobs and even with the tax breaks available to them, they contribute to this land of ours through taxes.

In the 80′s we lost huge numbers of our skilled workforce abroad.  Now, with fewer opportunities in far away lands, we have a wealth of people right here.  If we can tap into our own resources we may just find that we are in a better position than we were back in the days of bad hair styles and leg warmers.

Enough of the bah humbugs!  Let us make merry with what we have and work hard at creating a more affluent new year!

Do Nurses make good Medical Sales Reps?

nurses2Do Nurses make good Medical Sales Reps?

We are asked this question a lot and the simple answer is ‘YES’. You might ask ‘WHY’ and the simple reason is, Nurses are good listeners.

Of course it is not only being a good listener that gets you into Medical Sales but a combination of other factors too. A Nurse has a good all-round knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology and in a lot of cases can be a Specialist. A Medical Sales company seeking a Cardiology Sales Rep for example will look at a Nurse who has specialised in this area.

Now don’t get me wrong here. It is not all as simple as that. Not all Nurses want to go into Medical Sales but this blog is focused on those who DO. Those who feel that they have the passion and drive to sell are those Nurses that become successful in Medical Sales.

We have placed a number of Nurses with no Medical Sales experience in Medical Sales companies and they have all been excellent.

Nurses live in a Hospital environment, they speak in  medical terms all day and they are passionate about what they do. The only thing that they are missing is SALES

That is easily rectified as there are a lot of Medical Sales Training courses available focused on medical professionals wanting to get into SALES. For any of you Nurses out there thinking of getting into Medical Sales, these courses are a MUST.

A lot of Nurses find that after a number of years, they are ready for a new challenge and Medical Sales seems a natural career move for them. They like the change of having their week-ends off and working to earn more money.

If any of you Nurses are thinking about a career change, think seriously about Medical Sales.

Ask yourself the questions:

1) Am I passionate about what I do?

2) Am I driven by money?

If the answer to the above is ‘YES’, Medical Sales could be the career move for you.

New Medical Centre for Dublin

New Medical Centre to open

New Medical Centre to open

The Board of Trinity College Dublin has endorsed plans to establish a new integrated advanced medical centre, the Trinity Academic Medical Centre (TAMC), in collaboration with its major teaching hospitals, St James’s and the Adelaide and Meath Hospital Dublin Incorporating the National Children’s Hospital at Tallaght (AMNCH).

The first of its kind in Ireland, the TAMC will combine best practice in patient care with cutting edge research and teaching in a single governance medical model based on world-leading healthcare centres.

This new single cohesive entity is a radical new departure from the current practice, where the three institutions deliver these activities separately, operating entirely independently of one another. The three institutions have been actively pursuing this plan for some time.

It will offer a highly attractive work environment for the highest talent of the medical field, which will facilitate the recruitment and retention of the very best of medical professionals.

As a centre of medical education and research as well as advanced services, it will offer improved training for junior doctors, which will have benefits for patients throughout the country.
