Caffeine gets the thumbs up!

Caffeine gets the thumbs up

Caffeine gets the thumbs up

Caffeine gets the thumbs up it seems as shown by a recent study by Cochrane Researchers.

Caffeine can help to reduce errors made by shift or night shift workers according to this study.

As all us Nurses know, it’s no joke keeping alert, never mind awake during night shift number 4 of 7 on a quiet Ward on a long 12 hour uneventful night shift.

These researchers reviewed the data taken from 13 trials studying the effects of caffeine on performance of shift or night shift workers.

Caffeine appeared to reduce the errors compared to placebos or naps and improved the performance in various neuropsychological tests.

The average age on these trials was between 20 – 30.

Your Best Foot Forward

Be the Best

Be the Best

When reviewing or re-doing your CV, stop and rethink it. You need to think of your CV as your representative on first look! Put your best foot forward with your CV.

  • Do not tweek your CV to the job, rather include the relevant details in each position you have held and that should speak for itself.
  • Pur your jobs in chronological order and not in terms of relevancy to the job you are applying for. i.e. in date order not your Nursing jobs first then your Medical Sales jobs.

It is easier to read a CV when put in chronological order. If your CV has all the relevant duties worked per job, then it will speak for itself and your best foot will be put forward to potential employers.

So rethink when revising your CV – simply make sure all the details are up to date and it will speak for itself!

It’s All in the Details

Details Details Details

Details Details Details

Whether you are applying for a Medical Sales job, a Nursing Job or a job in the Medical Device industry, your CV says everything about you from first glance. Whether you get that second glance depends on the contents of your CV. It’s all in the details you have provided.

Where as once upon a time, your title in the medical company you worked for and the dates you worked there were all self explanatory, these days a little more fine tuning is required in the details of your CV.

For example, if you are a Nurse, it is no longer acceptable to simply give the name of the hospitals you have worked in and your title of “Staff Nurse” and hope for the best. You need those extra details of not just the hospital, but the type of ward, the specific duties you carried out on a daily basis. Whether you are Orthopaedics or Cosmetics… it is all in the details.

Similarly, if you are working in the Kitting Department of a Medical Device company, you cannot just assume that your next potential employer will automatically know what your current job entails:

  • Do you deal with QA? How so?
  • Do you have regular contact with R&D? In what capacity?
  • Do you have detailed involvement with Product Development? Explain the details.
  • Have you named or detailed the specific projects you have worked on?

It is a very difficult mission, and although a bit daunting it will be worth it in the end. It is those extra details in this day and age that could get you that second glance.. possibly the job!

New Nursing Rules

New Rules

New Rules

This week, the Board of An Bord Altranais have discussed new nurses rules to be drafted, to ascertain the accreditation of

  • advance nurse practitioners  and
  • advanced midwife practitioners positions.

These new rules will accommodate the registration of individuals in these new sectors of An Bord Altranais’ Register.

This will be renamed as the advanced nurse practitioner division and the advanced midwife.

These new rules, which are to replace those of 2007, must be approved by the Board of An Bord Altranais and signed into effect by Health Minister Mary Harney.

Format your CV

Tidy it Up

Tidy it Up

Please format your CV!

A few key points to note before sending your CV out:

  • Font – is it clear and concise
  • Font Size – trust me, 12 is big enough!
  • Bold/ Italics – Bold is best for titles, the rest in plain text. I find that Italics can be a bit hard on the eye
  • Use the tab button for spacing!
  •  Do not forget the dates, the company name and your job title

So whether you are a Nurse, a Medical Sales Rep, a Chief Medical Scientist or a Radiographer, it helps those reading it to format your CV!

Suspended for Posting Pictures on Facebook

Suspended for posting pictures on facebook.

Suspended for posting pictures on facebook.

In Scotland a nurse has been suspended for posting pictures of patients during operations on facebook.

The location of the pictures was identified by a NHS logo in the background.  Social Media is great, and I know that the last post here was about marketing yourself and showing that you are an expert in your field, but that was not clever.

It should be noted that the patients were not identifiable in these pictures, which were snapped in a Glasgow hospital.  It is also claimed that most other staff (if not all) were unaware that the pictures were being taken.  That strikes me as a somewhat strange claim in a theatre environment.

Back in October of last year Facebook stepped up their security, filling in some security holes that allowed people to access photos in private profiles.  Even in a protected profile, any pictures on Facebook can not be assumed to be secure though.  They are visible to friends, who can copy and disperse them further.  In general it should be assumed that anything you ever put up on the internet is not secure.  What’s more it should be assumed that anything you put on the internet is there for ever.  This applies to data you delete too.  There will be caches of old information that retain a copy of deleted information.

The Scottish nurse that posted the pictures on Facebook is suspended pending an internal investigation, but it would be surprising if he/she is not hung out to dry for such a breach of confidentiality, even if the patients were not identified.
