Caffeine gets the thumbs up it seems as shown by a recent study by Cochrane Researchers.
Caffeine can help to reduce errors made by shift or night shift workers according to this study.
As all us Nurses know, it’s no joke keeping alert, never mind awake during night shift number 4 of 7 on a quiet Ward on a long 12 hour uneventful night shift.
These researchers reviewed the data taken from 13 trials studying the effects of caffeine on performance of shift or night shift workers.
Caffeine appeared to reduce the errors compared to placebos or naps and improved the performance in various neuropsychological tests.
The average age on these trials was between 20 – 30.
